2013 Jamboree and the Global Fat Scale

I never thought much about BMI until I made the decision to go to the Boy Scouts of America's National Jamboree next year.  The jamboree will be the grand opening of the Summit Betchel Reserve in West Virginia, which will be an amazing high adventure camp.  As a result of all the high adventure activity and the rugged terrain, this jamboree will both be much more physically demanding than past jambos.Global Fat Scale

There will be no bus routes or personal vehicles at jambo.  All participants and staff will hike everywhere they go.  I think it's awesome that both the Summit and National Jamboree will be "kickin' it Boy Scout style"!  But it means that there's no place for adult volunteers that are overweight or obese.  They're enforcing some strict rules on BMI - and rightly so.

I've been in training since March and I'm at the high end of being able to attend now after dropping 40 pounds, but I'll be continuing on to make sure I'm well within a solid BMI as I'll be serving on national staff.

Stumbled across this little widget from BBC News that takes UN population data and shows you where you fall of the Global Fat Scale.  Check it out!

Visitor Info for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree

The 2013 National Scout Jamboree will start on Monday, July 15, and run through Wednesday, July 24, 2013. That's a little over a year away, but I'm already excited for two reasons:

  1. It's within easy driving distance for me, and2013 National Scout Jamboree
  2. I'll be serving on National Staff at it!

50,000 Scouts, Venturers, volunteers, and staff are expected to attend. The 2013 Jambo will also be the grand opening of the B

oy Scouts Of America's fourth high adventure camp, the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve.

Beyond that, a large number of daytime visitors will drop in for a taste of Jamboree. I've heard a lot of here say and rumor about visitors to the 2013 Jambo. Everything from "there will be no visitors allowed this time" to "no point since there's no merit badge midway, there's nothing for visitors to do" and all the way to "it's going to cost a small fortune to visit".

Having gone through all the official documentation, here's my efforts to clarify a few things:

Are visitors allowed at the 2013 National Jamboree?
Yes - the jamboree will be open to visitors every day, beginning Wednesday, July 17, and continuing through Tuesday, July 23, 2013.
